DIGITAL WELLNESS

Feeling Distracted? Trouble focusing? Getting sucked into social media? Constantly checking your phone? Working more than ever? Digital wellness may be your solution.

WHAT IS DIGITAL WELLNESS

What is digital wellness? A healthy relationship with technology.

SIDE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Today, we are in front of screens more than ever, especially since the pandemic, constant access to work, school, and social media. We are slowly becoming more and more addicted to our devices.

Unfortunately, this addiction to technology, social media, our phones is leading to devastating side effects such as:

  1. Diminished productivity due to the inability to focus,

  2. Decrease in IQ and problem solving, and

  3. Increase in depression

We all see it in our workforce, in our children, in our productivity.

DIGITAL WELLNESS SOLUTIONS

To overcome this addiction to technology and reduce its side effects, we must set clear boundaries, turn off constant notifications, and take breaks, for example:

  • If you are trying to complete a task, put your phone away. Turn off notifications (the iPhone has made it easy by allowing you to set "focus" and only allow emergency calls when you are in work mode). Be present.

  • If you work from home, build-in time for lunch and drive time; separate home and work. Get up and stretch. Walk outside and pretend you are driving home from work. Take breaks.

  • If you find yourself constantly sucked into social media, set a timer and turn it off when the timer goes off. Then, interact with a family member, friend or colleague, or nature.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY

This pandemic taught us the need for community and interaction and the impact of isolation and solely technology. We all need to spend more time interacting, having a conversation, being with nature, and prioritizing our time with technology.

BALANCE WITH TECHNOLOGY

Technology is addicting and a mandatory part of our life. With everything, we have to find balance, boundaries, and healthy habits; if not, we will experience the negative, long-term side effects of this addiction. We all must practice digital wellness.
